 Aroid Page

Aroids are a group of diverse plants belonging to the Araceae family. Included are the Arisaema, Philodendron, Arum Lilly, Colocasia, Caladium and many more including some evil smelling things like Sauromatum and Amorphophallus. Some members of this family of plants like Colocasia esculenta in its various forms are an important food crop in many parts of the world. The characteristic that identifies an Aroid is the inflorescence which consists of a showy (not always, though) spathe and an obscenely erect spadix! It is the spadix that bears the minute male and female flowers. Members of the Aroid family make wonderful house plants and flowering plants. Some like Anthurium andreanum and Spathiphyllum are grown in large quantities all over the world for cut-flower production. Some aroids are a challenge to grow.
